Cannes roundup and predictions!

So tomorrow it ends, the 65th Cannes Film Festival. The fest has been angering and mostly underwhelming. Outside of raves for The Past, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Blue is the Warmest Color, not much has been liked at all. Sure, Behind the Candelabra was well-received, and Paolo Sorrentino's The Great Beauty was liked, but everything else has been a disappointment.

Especially Only God Forgives. What fantastic trailers! The film is generally regarded as the worst one in competition, despite the massive hype. What disappointment!

To be 100% honest, I anticipated almost every film in the competition, so it pained me to see Nebraska get side-stepped, Jimmy P. to be ignored (and at this point, forgotten), and The Immigrant to be so low. It's now time to see which films will take home the big prizes.

Cannes we do it?

I am a special type of film journalist. I am a teenager, I go to school, and I post infrequently. And since I am all 3 of these traits, it comes as no surprise that I am not going to the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. I am basing my thoughts and soon-to-be festival award predictions on what I read. Here's some thoughts on the films that anticipate, based on my skimmings:

THE CONGRESS
A satire on the ideas of fame and aging, but has an odd directorial style. Odd in the respect of being equally unclear and fascinating. From what I've heard, the film is gorgeous and Robin Wright is great at playing a variation of herself.

THE BLING RING
A fancy film, one about a candy-colored craze tiptoeing into houses every night. Again, another divisive film due to directorial style. Some say it is a reflection of today's society, some call it like a music video. Opener of the Un Certain Regard, and praise upon this is most definitely uncertain.

THE PAST (LE PASSE) 
Definitely one of the best films of the festival so far. Universally praised, many declaring Farhadi as a master of human drama. Looks great, can't wait.

Great Gatsby to open the Cannes Film Festival!

So the race begins. Again. I'm glad that this beast is opening, so it must be good enough to be selected for Cannes.

Could'a been a Cannes-tender: My award predictions...

Cannes Film Festival ends in two days, and it's been kind of a disappointment. The Paperboy, Lawless, and many others have been divisive disappointments, and other films have been middling and mediocre. The high points, though, have been Moonrise Kingdom, Love, Rust and Bone, Holy Motors, and maybe On the Road.

What will take home the Palme d'Or, however? I would change my old opinion of Cosmopolis to Love, but Haneke was already awarded two years ago. Cannes is like that, not rewarding the same director twice. I originally thought Moonrise Kingdom would be cute show, but now its an actual contender. I don't see it winning the Gold, but it might win the Jury Prize or even Grand Prix. This makes me want to give it to Rust and Bone. It probably won't go to Rust, but I think the lovely Cotillard might win Best Actress. I mean, it's French film with the main character being paralyzed! Last time a film like that was entered (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), it didn't go empty handed!

Breaking news! Tomorrow night, Cannes and Weinstein Company is proud to present footage from The Master, Django Unchained, and The Silver Linings Playbook. All three films listed are from recent Academy-Award nominees PT Anderson, Tarantino, and David O'Russell.

Malick's next wonder is titled and rated.

If people ask me my most anticipated film this year, it's a three-way tie between The Dark Knight Rises, The Master, and Untitled Terrence Malick Project. Until now.

Malick, a very enigmatic and quality-over-quantity filmmaker, is slamming and going in reverse. Last year he brought us the masterful The Tree of Life, and this year is bringing us To the Wonder.

Wonder is rated R, for sex/nudity. I won't be surprised if it's shopped around at Cannes, or makes a splash in Venice. If it comes out this year or next, I'm psyched either way.

So I've been doing my homework on the best and most important of the year's festivals: Cannes.

Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom opened the festival today, to critical acclaim. Will it win the Palme d'Or? I highly doubt it, but as an opener, it has excelled. Praise (That I've read,) states excellent child acting. Cannot wait to see this at the end of May/Early June.

2012 Cannes!

I've been eagarly awaiting this year's Cannes Film Festival ever since The Tree of Life won big last year. Unfortuantely, this year's lineup is... disappointing.

There's a healthy amount of english-language films in the festival, including On the Road, Moonrise Kingdom, Cosmopolis, Killing Them Softly, The Paperboy, Mud, and Lawless.

I'm mainly disappointed by the lack of Malick and PT Anderson, or a suprise screening of Prometheus. On the bright side, I'm happy that Cosmopolis made it, and am still rooting for Moonrise Kingdom. Full competition below.

Cannes + Cronenberg = The Palme d'Or?

So recently the first image and teaser has been posted for the potential Cannes winner, if it's even accepted. What the film has got is David Cronenberg using sex in a film, which is what he does best. I think this may be the film of the year, critically of course, but audiences just might not escape the fact that is has ROBERT PATTINSON! Teaser below.

Wes Anderson to open Cannes!

So its announced. The opening film at Cannes is Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom. The film stars Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, and two teenagers. Preceding the news is the new poster for Moonrise Kingdom, as seen below. The entire competition will be announced on April 19.

Cannes we do it!

Cannes. The most important festival of all. Some argue Telluride or Toronto, or even Berlin. See, Cannes brought 1/3 of the nominees for Best Picture. They weren't the crappy ones like Extremely Loud, but it was The Artist, The Tree of Life, and Midnight in Paris. In 2010.. nothing happened. Anyways, Cannes also brought out Apocalypse Now, Fahrenheit 9/11, and others. There's actually been some new speculation, an I could not be more psyched. Potential nominees are Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, Malick's Voyage of Time, and Allen's Nero Fiddled. I am insanely excited.
